On Thursday CMS released its Part D prescription drugs data file detailing prescribing by physicians and other health care professionals in 2013. CMS said over a million health care providers collectively prescribed $103 billion in prescription drugs and supplies for over 3,000 distinct drug products. The top 10 branded drugs accounted for 17.5 percent of the total Part D spend.
The top seller in 2013, Nexium (esomeprazole), is now available over-the-counter and in prescription strength a generic is manufactured by Ivax, a division of Teva Pharmaceuticals. Cymbalta (duloxetine) went generic in late 2013 and Abilify (aripiprazole) is expected to lose patent protection in the second quarter of this year.
